The Antarctic Krill Fishery: A Benchmark in Sustainable Marine Sourcing

At QRILL Pet, sustainability starts at the source. The Antarctic krill fishery is widely recognized as one of the most responsibly managed fisheries in the world. It's from these pristine waters that we harvest our krill—providing pet food brands with a powerful, traceable ingredient rooted in science and environmental care.

Strict Ecosystem-Based Management

The krill fishery operates under the oversight of CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources), one of the most rigorous fisheries management systems globally. The total harvest is restricted to less than 1% of the estimated biomass, ensuring that krill remains abundant and the broader ecosystem stays in balance.

Scientific assessments confirm the health of the krill population. For example, a 2019 study found approximately 63 million tones of krill biomass in Area 48—up from 56 million in 2000—illustrating long-term stability in the region.

Low Impact, High Transparency

All vessels are required to carry independent observers, and the fishery is monitored in real time using satellite tracking and electronic reporting. The result? One of the lowest bycatch rates recorded in any trawl fishery globally—just 0.01%.

Our patented Eco-Harvesting® technology helps us go even further by preventing unnecessary bycatch and preserving the nutritional integrity of the krill. This means we can deliver a consistently high-quality ingredient without compromising marine biodiversity.

Safeguarding Antarctic Wildlife

Krill is a foundation species in the Antarctic food chain, and maintaining its population is essential for predators like penguins, seals, and whales. Recent growth in these species’ populations signals that current harvesting practices are not interfering with their food supply.

In addition to strict quotas, krill companies have voluntarily introduced large seasonal no-fishing zones—over 74,000 km²—around penguin breeding areas to further protect vulnerable ecosystems during critical times.

Responsible Sourcing in a Changing Climate

Climate change is reshaping marine ecosystems, but the Antarctic krill fishery continues to lead by example. From emission-reduction strategies to data-driven harvesting and adaptive management, this is a fishery built to endure and evolve.

For QRILL Pet, this matters. It means the krill we use is not only nutritious—it’s part of a responsible, long-term vision for the planet and our pets.

Sustainable Nutrition for Pets

QRILL Pet ingredients bring more than EPA & DHA omega-3s. They deliver functional benefits such as improved skin & coat health, heart support, and cognitive function. And they do so with a traceable, climate-conscious footprint that modern pet owners care about.

By choosing krill, our partners help reduce pressure on land-based resources and fishmeal, while giving pets access to essential nutrients from one of nature’s most sustainable sources.

At QRILL Pet, we believe better health starts with better ingredients—and it all begins in the Southern Ocean.
